Product Description
What type of steel does 50Mn steel belong to
50Mn steel belongs to high-quality carbon structural steel . Its core characteristics and classification basis are as follows:
I. Material types and standards
Steel grade type
50Mn is a high-quality carbon structural steel that complies with the Chinese national standard GB/T 699-1999. Internationally, it corresponds to grades such as the Japanese standard S53C, the American standard 1050/1053, and the German standard C50.
Naming meaning
"50" : indicates an average carbon content of approximately 0.50% (actual range 0.48%-0.56%);
"Mn" : indicates that manganese is the main strengthening element, with a content of 0.70%-1.00%, significantly enhancing hardenability and wear resistance.
⚖️ II. Chemical Composition characteristics
Element content range (%) function
Carbon (C) 0.48-0.56 provides basic strength and hardness
Manganese (Mn) 0.70-1.00 enhances hardenability and improves wear resistance
Sulfur/phosphorus (S/P) ≤0.035 strictly control impurities to ensure the purity of the material
Other elements (such as Si, Cr, Ni, etc.) are trace residues and are all subject to national standards.
⚙️ III. Distinction from alloy steel
The nature of non-alloy steel
Although 50Mn contains a relatively high amount of manganese, it does not deliberately add alloy components such as chromium and nickel. It strictly belongs to high-manganese carbon steel rather than alloy steel.
Compared with alloy steel 50Mn2
50Mn2 (GB/T 3077) contains as much as 1.40%-1.80% and is classified as alloy structural steel ;
The manganese content of 50Mn is lower (≤1.00%), and no other alloying elements are added.
IV. Typical performance and limitations
Characteristics, advantages, limitations
Mechanical properties: Tensile strength ≥645MPa, yield strength ≥390MPa. Poor weldability and prone to cracking
Heat treatment adaptability After quenching and tempering, hardness and elasticity are significantly improved. There is a tendency for overheating sensitivity and tempering brittleness
V. Core application scenarios
Mainly manufacture three types of key components:
High-load wear-resistant parts : gear shafts, friction discs, mandrels (diameter ≤80mm);
Transportation components : train axles, automotive crankshafts, connecting rods;
Elastic element : structural components such as flat springs that require high elasticity.
In summary, 50Mn, through the formula design of "medium carbon + high manganese" , achieves performance close to that of low alloy steel within a carbon steel frame, making it a cost-effective choice for wear-resistant load-bearing parts.
