How to replace the oil filter correctly?

A step-by-step guide for correctly replacing the oil filter element


The oil filter element is the core component of the engine lubrication system. Regular replacement can prevent contaminants from circulating and wearing out the engine components ‌. The following steps are based on professional operation practice to ensure the safety and efficiency of the replacement process. Before operation, the following items need to be prepared: new oil filter element, corresponding model wrench, measuring cup, new engine oil, gloves and safety bracket (essential for chassis operation) ‌.


Warm-up operation ‌ : Start the engine and let it run for 5 to 10 minutes to raise the oil temperature to approximately 60°C (warm to the touch), which facilitates the flow of old oil and the removal of the filter element ‌. When the vehicle is cold, if the filter element is too tight, it can easily lead to difficulties in disassembly or damage to the sealing ring.


Drain old engine oil ‌ :


Method One (oil extraction method) ‌ : applicable when there is no lifting equipment. After turning off the engine, unscrew the oil filling cap, pull out the oil dipstick, insert the oil pump hose deep into the oil pan, and start the pump to draw the old oil into the waste oil bucket. This method is highly efficient and avoids the risk of screw slippage, but it is necessary to ensure that the hose is inserted properly to reduce residue ‌.

Method Two (Oil drain method) ‌ : Lift the vehicle and secure it to the safety bracket. Remove the engine guard plate, use a wrench to loosen the oil pan drain screw (usually 15mm) counterclockwise, and align it with the container to drain the oil. Be careful of hot oil to prevent scalding ‌.

No matter which method is used, it should be left to stand for 10 minutes after discharge to ensure that the engine oil has drained completely ‌.


Remove the old filter element ‌ :


Loosen the old filter element counterclockwise with a filter element wrench (such as bowl-shaped or chain-shaped). For most models, the filter element is located at the bottom or side of the engine. When removing it, tilt the filter element to prevent waste oil from dripping onto the surface of the component ‌.

After removing it, check the condition of the old filter element. If there is a large amount of metal debris or carbon deposits remaining, it indicates that the engine needs further inspection.


Install the new filter element ‌ :


Clean the interface of the filter element seat to ensure there is no oil residue ‌.

Apply a small amount of new engine oil to lubricate the sealing ring of the new filter element (to improve the sealing performance), and manually screw it into the base until it adheres ‌.

Tighten it clockwise with a wrench. The torque should be controlled at 20-30 Newton-meters (refer to the filter element instructions). Over-tightening may cause deformation or oil leakage. It is recommended to use a torque wrench for precise operation ‌.


Add new engine oil and check ‌ :


Install the oil return screw or turn off the oil extraction equipment, and pour in new engine oil to the standard amount (refer to the vehicle manual). Start the engine and let it idle for 1 minute. Observe whether the filter element and interface are leaking ‌.

After turning off the engine, wait for 3 minutes and check the oil level on the dipstick. If it is insufficient, replenish it. Make sure the liquid level is ‌ between the scale lines.

Key points to note

The principle of synchronous replacement ‌ : every time the engine oil is changed, the filter element must be replaced. The residual contaminants in the old filter element will contaminate the new engine oil and reduce the lubrication effect ‌.

Sealing ring treatment ‌ : The old filter element sealing ring must be thoroughly removed; The new filter element comes with a sealing ring. It must be lubricated before installation; otherwise, it is prone to oil leakage ‌.

Tools and Safety ‌ : Safety brackets must be used when operating the chassis to avoid the risk of jack failure; Give priority to using long-lasting filter elements (silicone check valves are more heat-resistant) to extend the maintenance cycle ‌.

Cycle suggestion ‌ : for ordinary vehicles, replace every 5,000 to 10,000 kilometers; for construction machinery, replace every 300 hours. In dusty environments, shorten the cycle by 30% ‌.


Operational errors may lead to oil pressure leakage or filter clogging, causing engine wear ‌. It is recommended that the first attempt be made under professional guidance.
